NE Chapter Annual Report 2011
June 2011
The New England Chapter reports that it continues to maintain a stable membership base and remains financially solvent. Much of our Chapter's success comes from having a dedicated and active Board. The board extends its gratitude for the ongoing support of our special sponsors, individual members and supporters. Their generosity contributed to another successful season.
This past program year included a varied group of presentations. Our fall dinner meeting (Oct. 2010) speaker was Joanna Stavins, PHD, Senior Economist & Policy Advisor - Federal Reserve Bank (Boston) and her topic was The Consumer Payments Landscape. The winter meeting (Jan. 2011) featured James Steel, Chief Commodities Analyst with HSBC Bank USA. Jims discussion, Drivers of the Gold Price, helped make sense of volatile and active metals markets. Our spring meeting (March 2011) speakers, Rohit Savant, Sr. Precious Metals Analyst, and Erica Rannestad, Precious Metals Analyst presented CPM's Outlook for Silver and Gold. We continually strive to provide our membership with such informative speakers.
Our May meeting doubles as both the annual business meeting and our Jewelry Design Competition Awards night. Three Board members whose terms expired were reelected - Donna Kiesel of Gannon & Scott, John Regan of HSBC and Dr. Ravi Nadkarni. Two new Board members were elected - Kim Michalik of Pease & Curren and Shai Anbar of New Mile LLC. Mark Oliari of CNT, Inc. completed his 3 year term and Mike Gullison resigned upon leaving the industry. We noted the loss of long term supporter and chapter board member Richard Casey, Sr. Many recognize Dick from his service on IPMI's Security Council.
This year our chapter awarded $10,500 in prizes and grants including the second Carol Tyler Memorial Award. It was created in 2010 with IPMI's support. We continued an expanded scope of the Jewelry Design Awards Programs with increased value and the number of student awards. Additionally, based upon participation, all schools received a grant to directly support their qualifying programs. Congratulations to UMASS Dartmouth, Rhode Island College, and the Massachusetts College of Art & Design. We are working with institutions to incorporate participation in the IPMI Awards program as part of their class curriculum.
Attendees to our 21st Annual Jewelry Design Competition & Awards had the opportunity to meet participating students, their parents and professors, and to hear about the truly positive impact of our program. The jewelry auction affords bidders an opportunity to acquire unique, one of a kind pieces by budding artisans. The four top pieces were auctioned off and two honorable mention pieces were raffled. Proceeds are reinvested into funding next year's program and prizes. The students attending get an opportunity to receive awards, speak about their creations and take pride in their work being sold. Their work appears in the Awards night brochure and on an electronic overhead display throughout the evening. Ultimately award winning pieces appear in IPMIs newsletter. A total of $7,250 was awarded to students. The top five entries also received plaques: the Carol Tyler Memorial Award, the IPMI Presidents Award (sponsored by National), the LaFazia Award, the IPMI New England Chapter Award and an Award for Technical Merit. Four Honorable Mention awards were issued. All students also receive award certificates for their portfolio. This years Carol Tyler Memorial award winner, Avery Lucas, has garnered awards in 4 consecutive years. During that period she has won every prize except the Technical Merit award. She won as an undergraduate with Rhode Island College and now as a graduate student with UMASS Dartmouth.
Kudos to the Jewelry Design Committee chaired by Donna Kiesel, to the students who participate, to the professors who help maintain the quality of the entries over the years, and to the judges who again had difficult choices to make in the competition. Judging was extremely difficult with so many excellent pieces of work. More than 40 creations were entered.
IPMI continued its generous financial and logistical support. More importantly, it continues to provide encouragement for our chapters ongoing focus further benefiting the institutions, programs and students. This year our chapter awarded $10,500 in prizes and grants. The chapter is ever grateful for IPMIs commitment to the New England chapters program.
At our first Board meeting of the 2011 - 2012 season, in June, officers will be elected, committees formed, dinner and board meetings scheduled, and responsibilities for educational program, speakers and venues assigned. We encourage feedback and input and invite anyone interested to become a member, supporter, sponsor or director of the Chapter.
Respectfully submitted by: JOHN John H. King, President, IPMI New England Chapter June 12, 2011
