The International Precious Metals Institute (IPMI) was founded in 1976, as a collaborative effort of research professors from a wide collection of prestigious University’s; Cornell, NYU, Columbia, Brooklyn Polytechnic, MIT and others.
The IPMI’s mission is to collect, archive & share substantive, definitive and factual information regarding literally all aspects of the precious metals (gold, silver, platinum, palladium, rhodium, ruthenium, iridium & osmium).
Our members include corporations, universities, individuals involved in literally every aspect of the precious metals world. EG: exploration & mining / banking, trading & finance / refining & manufacturing / pharma & biomedical / automotive / electronics & other consumer goods.
We fulfill our mission by organizing and holding a variety of activities each year.
-- An Annual International Conference: with session topics addressing precious metals topics of current interest. Presented by world recognized leaders & experts in the field.
-- Regional Seminars: which focus in depth on specific topics: PGM economics, new refining approaches,
new technologies and precious metals, etc. We have regional chapters which also conduct informative & educational seminars.
Special Committees & Councils
We have a number of internal committees and councils. Their purpose is to provide a forum for focused work and distribution of information on topics pertinent to the group.
-- The Environmental & Regulatory Affairs Council (ERAC): holds meetings at least twice yearly. Their focus is on environmental & banking regulations that impact the precious metals and their usage, worldwide. We have specialty legal counsel to assist us in this area. Through our legal advisors we make
available a monthly newsletter, updating our members on the most recent developments in
environmental and regulatory law. Key geographical regions covered include North America, the EU and
-- The Sampling & Analytical Council: Holds meetings as needed but communicates regularly. Exploring
and explaining new developments in the area of precious metals analysis; from the latest in new
instrumentation to the latest in analytical techniques.

worldwide. They hold meetings at least twice per year. They examine topics in depth that impact the
safe & effective utilization of precious metals in the world of petroleum refining.

Annual International Precious Metals Conference
Our signature event is held each June. Delegates attend presentations given by industry leaders on
topics ranging from Emerging Technologies, Financial Management, Environmental Management,
Recovery, Refining, and Catalysis to Sampling & Analysis. Delegates come from member companies
around the world.
We also sponsor several seminars each year to address special topics of interest to members of the
global precious metals community. These seminars are a valuable tool, as attendees are encouraged to
participate in open discussions with the speakers and other industry experts in attendance.
We provide a Members Directory to all members. This provides a unique tool for ‘networking’ across
the entire global precious metals community. We publish a Precious Metals Buyers’ Guide. This is an exceptional resource to access a broad spectrum of various precious metals service providers. Available only to IPMI members
IPMI Scholarships & Grants
The IPMI Awards Program pays tribute to individuals who have made a significant contribution in the field of precious metals. Additionally, the IPMI student grants awarded each year encourage young people to look to precious metals as a career choice and support vital educational and research programs. The IPMI awards up to USD$150,000 to qualified students each year. All awards are given at our Annual
International Conference, held in June. The awards will be made to students who have started or plan to
do research or development projects in the field of precious metals and will not have graduated before
June of the award year.
One of our goals is to furnish timely technical, economic, environmental and educational information for the benefit of our members. In addition, IPMI provides the networking opportunities necessary for success in today's global marketplace. Whatever your current profession, if your work involves precious metals, we invite you to become an IPMI member.
